Ocean's one of those sensory play themes we could never get sick of. Besides keeping your child entertained, your child is benefiting from fine motor skills development with all the scooping, pinching and touching. Try this easy set up at home:
Preparation:
1. Oat as sand
2. Konnyaku jelly as water
3. Sea animals figurine
4. Tools for scooping
Language development
Ask your child what he is experiencing, "Is the jelly cold, smooth?" and in doing so, expand your child's vocabulary.
One way to spark a child's interest in literacy is through themed sensory play. Use this chance to incorporate phonics, spelling or getting your child acquainted with Chinese characters.
I particularly like happytotshelf's Fish Chinese Word Learning Pack that got my child recognising the Chinese character 鱼.
Ocean sensory bottles are ever so fascinating and beautiful.
Preparation:
1. Put sea animals figurines into a clear empty bottle
2. Fill 70% of the bottle with water and add a drop of blue food dye, a scoop of blue glitter (optional)
3. Lastly, fill the rest of the bottle with baby oil.
Science Discovery:Go slowly step by step and ask your child about his observations
What's Happening?
Oil and water have different densities. Oil is less dense than water so it rises above the water. The food colouring only colours the water because it is water soluble and does not dissolve in oil.
